A guide for people new to KittyKit. If you can't find what you need, contact us or report a bug below.

Getting started

1
Install and allow permissions

Open the DMG, move KittyKit to Applications and launch it. If a confirmation appears the first time, click Open (install guide), then turn on the Input Monitoring permission.

2
Choose a switch key

In Settings > Input Switching, add a rule, press a key such as Right ⌘ to assign it, then pick the two input sources to alternate between. Input switching is free.

3
Try the Pro tools

Tap a Pro feature such as Windows shortcuts or window layout to start the 7-day free trial. If you have a free code, enter it in Settings > Pro.

Frequently asked questions

Getting started
What is KittyKit?

A utility for macOS. It switches input with a single key, keeps a cat on your desktop and warns you about low batteries. Pro tools such as Windows shortcuts, standard function keys (F1–F12) and window layout come on top.

Which Macs does it run on?

Intel and Apple silicon Macs running macOS 13 or later.

A confirmation appears the first time I open it.

KittyKit is notarized by Apple, so it opens without an “unidentified developer” warning. Because it was downloaded from the internet, macOS may ask once whether to open it; click Open. The steps are in the install guide (Korean).

Is it on the App Store?

We distribute it directly only. In the App Store sandbox an app can't control other apps' windows, so window layout wouldn't work; we chose this route so as not to cut features.

How do I uninstall it?

Drag KittyKit from the Applications folder to the Trash. To remove its settings too, delete the ~/Library/Application Support/KittyKit folder. If you use Pro, click “Release on this Mac” on the app's Pro screen before deleting so the device slot is freed.

Free vs Pro, and payment
What is free and what is Pro?

Free: input switching, the desktop cat, battery alerts and diagnostics. Pro: Windows shortcuts (including Finder cut), standard function keys (F1–F12), window layout, separate scroll direction, the Finder right-click menu (New Folder, New Text File, Copy Path, Open Terminal Here), keep awake and focus screen. Pro features aren't hidden; they appear locked and you can preview their settings.

How does the free trial work?

The first time you tap a Pro feature, or when you click “7-day free trial” on the Pro card in Settings, all Pro features are available for 7 days. No card is needed and nothing is charged automatically when it ends. It isn't counted from the day you download the app, so setting up permissions doesn't shorten it. The trial can be used once.

How much is it? Is it a subscription?

It's a one-time payment, not a subscription. The price is KRW 9,900. The exact amount and tax are shown at checkout. (Pro purchase is coming soon; we'll announce it on this site when it opens.)

How is payment handled?

Our payment provider, Lemon Squeezy, processes it as the seller. KittyLand never receives your card details. When payment completes, the license key arrives by email.

Where do I enter the license key?

In the app's “Pro” tab, paste it into “Already bought? Enter your license key” and click “Activate”. Once activated, every Pro feature turns on right away, even if you never used the trial.

I can't find my key.

It's in the receipt email sent to the address you used at checkout. Check your spam folder too. If it's still missing, email [email protected] with your receipt.

Can I use it on several Macs?

You can activate it on as many devices as your purchase allows. To move to another Mac, click “Release on this Mac” on the old one, then enter the key on the new one.

Does Pro keep working without internet?

Yes. An activated Pro keeps working offline. The app checks that the key is valid when it starts and every few dozen minutes, but being unable to connect alone never turns Pro off. It only turns off when the server clearly answers that the key is invalid, such as after a refund or deactivation.

Can I get a refund?

It follows Lemon Squeezy's refund policy and applicable law. If something is wrong, email [email protected] with your receipt. See the Terms for details.

Is a free code really free for life?

Yes. We send an individual free code to people who ask. This offer is available for a limited time only. A code is tied to one Mac, and on that Mac you can use Pro features free for life. It can't be moved to another Mac, but reinstalling the app on the same Mac is fine. Request a code at [email protected].

Do my settings disappear when the trial ends?

No. Free features keep working and only Pro features stop. Your settings are kept and come back as they were once you buy Pro.

Features and permissions
Why does it need Accessibility and Input Monitoring permissions?

Recognizing the switch key and shortcuts needs Input Monitoring, and Windows shortcuts, window layout, focus screen and separate scroll direction need Accessibility. Permissions are used only to run those features; what you type and what is on screen are never stored or sent. More in the Privacy Policy.

Does it work when I type a password?

macOS stops apps from reading keystrokes in password fields (Secure Input). In that case Windows shortcuts don't work, and you can check the input switching state in the Diagnostics screen.

Doesn't Ctrl+C stop working in the terminal?

Terminal apps are excluded by default so Ctrl+C still interrupts a process. You can add or remove excluded apps in Settings or restore the default list. Note that with Windows shortcuts on, the Mac's Ctrl+A (line start) and Ctrl+F (forward) stop working.

Does it work in virtual machines like Parallels?

When a virtual machine or screen sharing app is in front, pressing the switch key sends only a single language-toggle key to the remote side. The input method follows the remote (Windows) side's settings.

How do the F1–F12 standard function keys work?

When on, pressing just F10 acts as F10, and functions like brightness and volume need fn. Apple keyboards change the same option as System Settings; external keyboards such as Logitech don't listen to System Settings, so the app remaps the keys instead. A Mac can't know the fn state of an external keyboard, so after the change you can't use media keys such as volume and playback.

Does the cat use a lot of battery?

It stays still when macOS Reduce Motion or Low Power Mode is on. While asleep it updates less often to save power, and clicks pass through its transparent parts to the app below. You can turn it off any time in Settings (it's off by default).

Which devices' batteries does it report?

The keyboards, mice and trackpads connected to this Mac. Devices whose charge macOS knows, Apple Magic devices and Logitech devices can be read. Disconnected devices and iPhones can't be read, and devices from other makers we couldn't test may not be readable.

The Finder right-click menu items don't appear.

In System Settings → General → Login Items & Extensions → Extensions → Finder, turn on “KittyKit Finder”. This is a Pro feature. Without Pro the menu items look dimmed and do nothing.

Privacy and contact
Do you collect what I type?

No. What you type, what is on screen and file contents are never stored or sent. The app has no accounts and sends no usage statistics (only website visits are counted with Google Analytics). The only information that leaves your Mac is the key (code) and Mac identifier when you activate a license key or free code, and the app version number when it checks for new versions. See the Privacy Policy.

Where do I report a bug or problem?

You can create a report in the app's Diagnostics tab. Check the preview, then save or copy it and send it to [email protected]. The app never sends it automatically.
