How do I split windows in half on a Mac?

The short answer. macOS 15 (Sequoia) and later have built-in tiling by dragging a window to a screen edge. To get left half, right half, fill and center with one shortcut, even on macOS 13 and 14, use KittyKit window layout (Pro).

Built into macOS

On macOS 15 (Sequoia) and later, dragging a window to an edge or corner of the screen tiles it. On earlier versions you can press and hold a window's green button for options like “Tile Window to Left of Screen”. Both need the mouse.

Place the current window right away with a shortcut or a menu bar item.

You can change the shortcuts in Settings, and it warns you if one clashes with another action or a macOS shortcut (⌃ or ⌘ is required). It needs the Accessibility permission, and it tells you why when there is no window, the window can't be resized (such as full screen) or there is only one monitor. Window layout is a Pro feature with a 7-day free trial.

What is KittyKit? A macOS utility that gives you one-key language switching, Windows shortcuts, F1–F12 function keys, window layout and a desktop cat in one app. Input switching, the cat and battery alerts are free, and Pro tools have a 7-day free trial. About KittyKit · How to install
