How do I change the language switch key on a Mac?
The short answer. In System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts > Input Sources you can change the default switching shortcut, and the Caps Lock key can switch input languages too. If you want one key like Right ⌘ to do it, you need KittyKit.
The macOS way
- Caps Lock: in System Settings > Keyboard > Input Sources > Edit…, turn on “Use the Caps Lock key to switch to and from ABC”; then tap it to switch.
- Control + Space: switches to the input source you used before. You can change the combination in System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts > Input Sources.
Why the default way is awkward
Even if you want to switch with a single key like Windows (for example Right Alt or the Han/Eng key), macOS settings can't assign Control, Option or Command on their own. With several input sources, such as 2-Set Korean, 3-Set Korean and English Dvorak, it is also hard to decide which key picks which source.
Connect input sources to a single key with KittyKit
- In KittyKit Settings > Input Switching, click Add Rule.
- Press the key you want to use (Right ⌘, Right ⌥ and so on) when asked to press a key.
- Pick the two input sources, A and B, to alternate between (for example 2-Set and ABC).
Tapping that key alone switches between A and B, and combinations like ⌘C keep working as usual. Input switching is free.
What is KittyKit? A macOS utility that gives you one-key language switching, Windows shortcuts, F1–F12 function keys, window layout and a desktop cat in one app. Input switching, the cat and battery alerts are free, and Pro tools have a 7-day free trial. About KittyKit · How to install
